Harry Frankfurt wrote a whole philosophy paper — later a bestselling little book — defining bullshit. Not lies. Bullshit. The distinction matters.A liar knows the truth and deliberately says the opposite. A bullshitter doesn't care about the truth either way. They're not trying to deceive you about some specific fact. They're just trying to produce language that sounds right and serves a purpose without any regard for whether it's actually true. The bullshitter's crime isn't getting it wrong. It's that getting it right was never the point.If that doesn't describe how a large language model generates text, I don't know what does.LLMs are not trying to be accurate. They are trying to produce statistically plausible next tokens. When the output happens to be true — and it often is — that's a happy side effect, not the goal. The model has no internal fact-checking step, no commitment to truth, no concept of truth at all. It has a commitment to fluency. Frankfurt could not have designed a more perfect bullshit machine if he'd tried.<h4>This doesn't mean LLMs are useless</h4>I want to be clear: bullshit, by Frankfurt's definition, isn't necessarily wrong. A bullshitter can stumble into the truth constantly. And LLMs do. They're remarkably useful for coding assistance, brainstorming, summarizing, drafting, and a hundred other tasks. The output being "bullshit" in the technical philosophical sense doesn't make it bad output. It just means you can't trust it because it said so. You have to verify it on other grounds.The problem isn't any single interaction. The problem is scale.<h4>Bullshit at scale dilutes truth</h4>When everyone has a tool that produces confident, fluent, plausible-sounding text on any topic with zero regard for accuracy, the volume of bullshit in the world goes up by orders of magnitude. And when bullshit proliferates, truth doesn't disappear — it just gets harder to find. It's the same amount of signal buried in exponentially more noise.Search results fill with AI-generated content. Reports get padded with LLM filler. Documentation, articles, marketing copy, analysis — all of it increasingly produced by systems that have no opinion on whether what they're saying is true. The ratio shifts. Finding a source you can actually trust becomes more work, not less. That's the corrosive thing about bullshit: it doesn't attack truth directly, it degrades the entire information environment until the concept of "reliable source" starts to lose meaning.<h4>The bullshit-to-bullshit pipeline</h4>Here's the part that's almost funny. Ask people where LLMs save them the most time, and a pattern emerges: LLMs are incredibly good at generating a bullshit response to a bullshit task.The performance review nobody reads. The status update that exists for bureaucratic reasons. The cover letter both parties know is performative. The executive summary of a report that was itself a formality. LLMs absolutely crush these tasks. And people love them for it, understandably — who wants to spend two hours writing something that doesn't matter?But think about what's actually happening. Organizations are full of processes that demand the production of text nobody values. Now there's a tool that automates producing that text. Instead of anyone asking why are we requiring this in the first place, the bullshit task persists, now answered by a bullshit-generating tool, and everyone calls it a productivity win.This is probably a big part of why enterprises keep hearing that employees love their AI tools but can't find the massive efficiency gains in the numbers. The tasks where LLMs help most are often the tasks that shouldn't exist. Automating waste isn't efficiency. It's just faster waste.<h4>So what do we do?</h4>Use LLMs. They're genuinely useful. But be honest about what they are: tools that produce fluent text without caring whether it's true. That means:Verify anything that matters. If the stakes are real, the LLM's output is a starting point, not a conclusion. Don't let fluency substitute for trust.Resist the bullshit cycle. If an LLM can do a task in ten seconds and nobody would notice the difference, maybe the task itself is the problem. Kill the task, don't automate it.Protect your sources of truth. As AI-generated content floods every channel, the things you can trust — primary sources, verified data, domain experts, your own direct experience — become more valuable, not less. Treat them accordingly.Frankfurt warned that bullshit is more dangerous than lying because it erodes our relationship with truth itself. We just built the most efficient bullshit engine in human history and gave it to everyone.
